The Vodspa is the large river which defines the communities east of the Gebrike Mountains. It starts in countless small streams formed from glacial runoff, which grow fierce during the spring and summer melt. These streams flow past the many Dwarven mining towns of the Gebrike range, providing drinking water and traversable passes through the mountains. Several of these streams come together at the west end of the Vodospa Valley, officially becoming the great Vodospa River.
The Vodospa’s weight of water has cut a valley into the mountains almost 60 miles long. Though the valley is narrow, the regular spring floods provide excellent farmland supporting many small communities. The river passes the great city of Zamtarvi at east end of the valley, and rolls over The Edge into Lake Jhila. From there the water spreads out into the Elrath Swamp . The water slowly progresses through the swamp out to the Eastern Sea , forming few navigable channels, the largest of which passes by the port town of Kerito.
The valley lies in the rain shadow of mountains, so the river provides most of the irrigation for the farms there, and it is one of the only areas east of the mountains that can produce enough food to support large mining operations. These mines produce high quality gems and metals prized around the Eastern Sea. The cities of Zamtarvi and Kekito have grown rapidly as trade along the river and out to see has boomed. But recently, trade between the cities has become more difficult, the swamp grows darker and denser, and raids on trade boats have become more frequent. King Teva of Zamtar has recently commissioned his mages to build airships so that the most precious cargo can fly over the dangerous swamp.
